The Ideal Investor Pitch Deck Format

I have now seen and worked on hundreds of pitch decks through my work with dental startups at Dental Venture Capital and on my monthly online pitch event.

Below is a simple format to follow when developing your pitch deck. I have links to AI tools that can help at the bottom of this post as well.

I also suggest you develop an investor page that includes your pitch deck for investors to review. Here are some samples:

IDEAL INVESTOR DECK

The ideal investor pitch deck is 11 slides or fewer and presented in 20-30 mins

Goal: To get to the next meeting (not to get to yes on the investment)

Slides should stand alone as a PDF leave-behind.

INTRO

  1. Vision/Value proposition in a short paragraph

Note: If it is a unique idea, use a comparison that the investor can understand. Example: “The Uber of treatment scheduling”.

THE PROBLEM

  1. The problem statement (with a relatable story). How big is this problem? Why should I care? Build tension.

  2. Your ideal customer (and opportunity #s, market size), but don’t overreach

Talk about the scope and scale of the problem. Who and how many people are suffering from the problem? Can address different segments here. Build more tension.

THE SOLUTION

  1. Your product and how it addresses the problem. More stories are better on how your product came to the rescue. Finally, a release of the tension.

  2. Revenue model. Who pays and how much? How does it fit within the competitive landscape (premium, commodity, etc)

WHO WANTS IT

  1. Traction/Validation/Roadmap - Goal is to show the large, untapped market and the volume of people already excited about your product. Could also include raving fans on SM. Include milestones achieved and next steps.

RISKS & WHY YOU WILL WIN

  1. Competition - If not direct, what are potential customers currently doing to solve this problem? How are you different, and why will customers choose you over the competition or the default option? How are competitors winning/losing, and how might you be doing this differently than them?

  2. Marketing & Sales Strategy - How will you FIND and WIN customers? Strategies and Tactics

  3. Team - Why you, why your team? If there are future roles, what are they? Why are they critical to growth?

THE MONEY DISCUSSION

  1. Financials (HIGH LEVEL ONLY) - Sales Forecast for 3 years, P&L, Cash Flow Forecast for 3 years. Be prepared to discuss assumptions and key expense drivers. BE REALISTIC!!

  2. Investment ask and use of funds: could include who else has invested and why they chose to invest.

Potential other slides

  • Exit Strategy (how will investors get a return)

  • Partnerships (licensing, distributors, etc) – include as a validation

  • Demo/Screenshots for Show and Tell

Documents to have available

  • Executive Summary (2-3 page max covering what you said during your pitch)

  • Any technical documentation needed to explain how your product works

  • Detailed financial documents

  • Detailed market research

  • Detailed marketing plan

RESOURCES

A good PowerPoint goes a long way, and we suggest you use a consultant to help you. We suggest that, for the graphic design part, you want a coach who also does great design and can help you craft your message and presentation.

The use of stories and “transferable concepts” is critical to gaining interest and buy-in from investors. Hire a consultant to help you craft your “story” and be LESS BORING.
